Seniors in the Lakeland are taking to the annual Alberta Seniors Week celebration.
Communities and organizations offer all kinds of programming during the first full week of June with information, fun, and of course food. Pancake breakfasts and barbecue lunches are the staple fare.
St Paul Regional FCSS tours St. Paul County during the week, with lunchtime events in St. Paul, Heinsburg, Mallaig, Elk Point, and Ashmont. Each visit on the tour includes a hot dog lunch, informative talks, games, and music.
Elk Point got things rolling for the week with a pancake breakfast on Sunday June 1.
Bonnyville Seniors Drop-In Centre started their week with their monthly pancake breakfast June 1, and then celebrated 50 years at a special luncheon June 3 (see story on page 3). Cold Lake Seniors’ Society served up a big lunch June 5.
Cold Lake had events running all week long including community learning sessions, the annual Age Friendly Cold Lake barbecue at the Mens Shed, safety and first aid classes at the FCSS, and a day full of activities on Friday at Cold Lake Energy Centre.
Alberta Seniors’ Week has been recognized since 1986 to celebrate and recognize the contributions seniors make to enhance the quality of life in Alberta. Seniors’ Week was inspired by the vision of the late Alice Modin, who began a campaign to start a seniors’ day in Strathcona County. That initiative helped pave the way for the weeklong annual event.
