Lakeland communities wisely hedged their bets on the weather for the Family Day weekend.
Many of the popular outdoor activities were back, but organizers in St. Paul, Bonnyville, and Cold Lake made sure there was plenty to do indoors as well. Good thing too, as the region was exposed to extreme cold conditions over the weekend.
Kinosoo Ridge Resort in the M.D. of Bonnyville was able to offer its full slate of “Snow Fever” activities on Saturday, but delayed its opening until noon due to the cold weather.
St. Paul took some of the shivers out of its “Shiver Fest” programming— the Ag Society’s skijoring and kids’ GT races were postponed, and the trout derby was cancelled. But free movies, swimming, skating, curling, and an Open House at St. Paul Visual Arts Centre provided plenty of family fun.
The Bonnyville Oilmen’s Society organized the outdoor activity at Vezeau Beach on Sunday with wagon rides, skating, curling, warming fires and hot food. Beaver River Fish and Game hosted ice fishing on the site with their “Kids Can Catch” program.
Bonnyville’s Centennial Centre hosted its popular “C2 Amazing Race” family competition throughout the facility.
In Cold Lake, the Snow Fever weekend covered several venues besides the Kinosoo Ridge events. The Reid Field House at the Energy Centre had plenty of bouncy castles and activities on Saturday. Outdoor events were held Sunday at Thomas Varughese Field, with ice sculptures and games, mini golf, tobogganing, skating, axe throwing, and more
The fun moved to the Colonel J.J. Parr Sports Centre at 4 Wing on Sunday with more fun inflatables, wagon rides, snow painting, swimming, and skating.
The third Monday in February has been celebrated as Family Day in Alberta since 1990.
