Bonnyville Seniors Drop-In Centre has a new executive, with a new president. Guy Charbonneau will take over as president, succeeding Sherry Hennessey who declined to run for re-election after two years in the role.
Charbonneau had been a director on the previous board. He said he was looking forward to continuing the good work the centre has been doing.
“I just got involved with the board last year. It’s been a fun year working with our fellow board people and our past president, Sherry,” he said. “Sherry had announced that she would be resigning from this position effective in January, so we had our meeting and I stepped up to volunteer to be president.”
Charbonneau and his wife had been travelling as snowbirds for the past several years, and both became involved with the Drop-In Centre only recently.
“I just felt we have such a good thing going here with this Bonnyville Senior Society that we’ve got to continue all the good work we do for our senior citizens,” he said.
Charbonneau said Hennessey will be helpful as past president, and will finish up some work she had been doing applying for grants for the centre.
He said the priorities for the new board include fundraising and attracting more members and participation. In addition to many activities and programs already offered, he said he’s excited to be adding Mah-Jongg—a Chinese tile-based game for four players.
“It’s a fun game, it’s good for the mind, and it’s a good time for socializing,” he said.
The Drop-In Centre facility is in good shape, he said, though there are maintenance and upgrading projects ongoing. The organization is also in good shape financially.
“We have a fantastic team to work with and our volunteers are very helpful . We have a great group of volunteers,” Charbonneau said.
“We always try to encourage more people to join the activities, and that’ll be our mission: to get more people involved and make it a fun time for everyone when they come out into the centre.”
