Barbara Hollis, Richelle Mason, and Dawn Hidson of Cold Lake Knit and Purl made a Christmas tree of  350 homemade “granny squares” and set it up at the North branch of the Cold Lake Library.

The crocheted squares were made over the course of the year, including some that were made at Knit and Purl sessions at the library.

“The idea came about when they were at the North branch at their evening Cold Lake Knit and Purl night and they thought that room needed a tree. So they made one, and kept it a secret from the staff,” said the library’s assistant director Tanya Boudreau.

The library staff is hoping the tree will stay up year round, with a different tree topper to reflect each month of the year, Boudreau said.

Barb, Richelle, and Dawn invite members of the public to come see the tree and to join them at Knit and Purl Wednesday nights at the North Branch from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. “If someone wants to learn, we love to teach,” Barb said.
