A tribute to an exceptional educator, leader, and community servant
The Lakeland community is preparing to honour one of its most dedicated citizens — Raymond Coates-by adding his name to the Lakeland Credit Union Wall of Distinction, a tribute reserved for those who have devoted their lives to serving others with quiet grace and unwavering commitment. The official celebration will take place on May 28th, inviting the entire community to recognize a lifetime of exceptional service.
For over three decades, Raymond shaped the minds and futures of our young people as a dedicated teacher and vice principal. He didn’t simply teach lessons from a textbook; he guided generations of students with compassion and conviction, leaving an imprint that extended far beyond the classroom walls. Those who had him as an educator often speak of how he believed in them when they needed it most— a legacy that continues through the countless lives he touched.
But Raymond’s service to our community extended far beyond education. He answered the call to public service as Mayor of Grand Centre, where he brought integrity and vision to local government. Recognizing the power of cooperative values to build stronger communities, Raymond became a dedicated member of Lakeland Credit Union, eventually serving on its Board.
His leadership extended even
further as a Board Member of Credit Union Central of Alberta, where his insights and dedication helped strengthen the credit union system that continues to serve families and businesses throughout our entire region.
What truly made Raymond exceptional, however, wasn’t the impressive titles he held or the positions he filled. It was the quiet, consistent way he gave back, the way he showed up when it mattered, rolled up his sleeves, and made a lasting difference in the lives of those around him. Whether contributing to Portage College, pursuing his passion for the outdoors with loved ones, or simply being present in his community, Raymond lived by example and embodied authentic leadership.
Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love for his family was matched only by his love for his community. Those close to him knew that his service wasn’t driven by a desire for recognition, but by a genuine care for people and a deep belief that community spirit could change lives.
As Kurt Richards, Lakeland Credit Union Chairman of the board, noted, “Raymond’s impact reaches far beyond the classrooms he taught or the positions he held. It’s in the lives he shaped, the community he served, and the legacy he left.”
With Raymond’s name on the Wall of Distinction, his legacy-one of education, leadership, and unwavering service-will be ensured to be remembered and to continue inspiring generations to come. His name stands as a permanent reminder of what true community leadership looks like.
Raymond Coates embodied the very best of us. He showed that a life well-lived is measured not by accolades, but by the difference we make in the hearts and futures of those we serve.
Join us on May 28th at the Lakeland Credit Union Cold Lake branch at 11am for an official ceremony honouring Raymond’s remarkable life and contributions to our community. Following the ceremony, all are invited to a free community BBQ celebrating his legacy. This is an opportunity for everyone in the Lakeland region to pay tribute to an exceptional man who gave so much to us all.
