The Legion Riders motorcycle club from Bonnyville Branch 183 had their first run of the season on the weekend.

“We had a pretty good turnout,” said Jack Wells, who coordinates Riders activities. “It was just a get-together—a Cold Lake run and a social session more than anything else.”

The Riders have been operating for a couple of years and are looking forward to another active season, Wells said. On June 3 they’ll have a “Break Out the Bike” event with a two-or three-hour ride followed by burgers at the Legion; and on June 24 they are planning a Legion To Legion poker rally.

The intended route for that rally will take them from Cold Lake to St. Paul, Ashmont, Lac La Biche, and home to Bonnyville for a steak supper.

Wells says the club’s focus is on recreational riding and socializing together. He hopes the Legion To Legion rally will encourage riders from other communities, and other Legion branches, to participate with them or even to form their own Legion Riders clubs.

The Bonnyville club’s membership numbers are holding steady from last year, he said, and he expects the new season will attract more.

An early-season run gave the Bonnyville Legion Riders a chance to blow the dust out of the pipes and get a feel for the road. The Riders are looking forward to an active summer.
