The Lakeland Cross-Country Ski Club is making the best of a challenging season.

The club hosted a Family Fun Ski on Saturday, with free use of equipment on its trails at St. Paul
Golf Course. Many local individuals and families took advantage of the snow and the beautiful mild weather.

Snow has been in short supply this winter, creating difficulties for the club. Volunteers, with help from the County of St. Paul, have only been able to open a couple of trails at their Westcove site. These have set tracks for classic skiing, but there isn’t enough snow to groom trails for skate-skiing.

But members have been busy, installing “permanent removeable” trail signs on the golf course. The signs project involved club members and the community at large.

The lack of snow has also meant a decline in membership, but the club still has to meet certain expenses regardless of the activity level. Some fundraisers have helped to make up the difference.

The weather forecast for the next few weeks includes a possibility of significant snowfall as the El Nino system in the Pacific Ocean weakens. It’s not too late to hope for some favourable spring skiing conditions with mild weather and plenty of new snow.

Free use of ski gear, some basic instruction, and sunshine on the snow made Lakeland Cross-Country Ski Club’s Family Fun Day a beautiful outing.. JEFF GAYE
